We get it. We know tobacco use is unhealthy. It damages your body in more ways than we have time to tell you.

And, let’s face it, we’ve all heard about the dangers of smoking before.

But here are some things you might not know about some of the products that are out there and the threats they pose to us all.

Name: Smoking

Product(s): Cigarettes and cigars
Nicotine Delivery: User inhales smoke from tip. Filter optional. Smoke can contain over 7,000 chemicals with some having the ability to cause cancer.
Consequences: Can cause any number of respiratory issues from simple inflammation of blood vessels to heart attack and stroke. Also proven to lead to cancer and serious illness or even death.
Marketing to Kids: Candy flavors, price discounts

Name: Smokeless (AKA Dipping)

Product(s): Chewing tobacco, spit tobacco, snuff, snus
Nicotine Delivery: Nicotine is absorbed through the gums and cheeks and enters the bloodstream faster than traditional smoking. This makes it more addictive and harder to quit.
Consequences: Apart from overall nastiness? Dipping can permanently stain your teeth and the inside of your mouth. It has also been proven to cause cancer. For a more sobering visual, see Gruen Von Behrens’ story.
Marketing to Kids: Minty flavors, deceptive packaging, easy to hide and use where smoking is not allowed

Name: Vaping

Product(s): Vape pens, tanks, vaporizers, etc. (New products hitting the market every day)
Nicotine Delivery: Much like smoking, nicotine is ingested through the tip of the product and enters the bloodstream through the lungs.
Consequences: The vaping industry is booming, no doubt. And if we get that, you better believe Big Tobacco gets it too. There is little to no research available on the health consequences of these products. They’re just too new. BUT, we get that nicotine is a highly addictive substance and the active ingredient in these products.
Marketing to Kids: How much time do you have? Candy flavoring, cool designs, innovative, ever-changing market, easily-adopted vaping culture

Name: Dissolvables

Product(s): Sticks, strips, orbs, etc.
Nicotine Delivery: These products melt in your mouth, delivering nicotine directly into the bloodstream through the tongue, cheeks, and gums.
Consequences: A lot of the time, these products look suspiciously similar to non-tobacco products like candies and mints. This can lead to nicotine poisoning in children. Not to mention the negative effects that come with ingesting nicotine.
Marketing to Kids: Packaging and products that resemble candy, candy flavoring, easy to hide and use where smoking is not allowed

Name: Hookah (AKA Shisha)

Product(s): Hookah or water pipe
Nicotine Delivery: Much like smoking, the plume is ingested through the lungs and delivers nicotine into the bloodstream.
Consequences: Because most hookah or shisha products are flavored, you don’t get the harshness of a traditional cigarette or cigar. This means that you can puff away long after you would have finished your cigarette. This means more of that nasty chemical soup , and nicotine, is going into your body.
Marketing to Kids: Candy flavoring, hip culture heavily adopted by young adults
